On Living Series
We learn, we laugh, we stumble, we get stuck, we find our way, and sometimes we start over. As long as we are still here, this life isn't finished.
In three small books, Pixel Williams explores the extraordinary business of being alive.
In Ordinary, she closely examines the overlooked objects, moments and rituals that carry our memories, connect us to one another and make an ordinary life anything but ordinary.
In Oldering, she considers what a lifetime leaves with us: a changing body, accumulated memories, hard-earned perspective, and the growing realization that who we have become is ours to claim.
In Outrageous, she asks what can happen if we stop holding ourselves back, if we let go of some of the rules, expectations and permission-seeking and unleash whatever in us is not yet finished.
These are not instructions for living. They are stories from a life being lived, usually thoughtfully, sometimes stumbling, and often with considerable amusement.
Read them in any order. Begin wherever you happen to be.
ORDINARY
The extraordinary has a habit of hiding in plain sight.
Coffee cups. Cardboard boxes. Old trucks. Good china. Dried flower stems. The things we keep, the things we lose, and the things we don't realize matter until suddenly they do.
In Ordinary, Pixel Williams turns her attention to the rituals we develop, the habits we acquire, the memories tucked into unexpected places, and the small absurdities that somehow become part of life.
Funny in places, tender in others, and occasionally ridiculous, Ordinary is an invitation to notice what is already there.
Because an ordinary life, examined closely, isn't very ordinary at all.
OLDERING
Oldering is what happens when aging stops being an abstraction and starts leaving notes around the house.
In Oldering, Pixel Williams explores who we once were, who we expected to become, and who we find ourselves to be now.
With humor, honesty and an occasionally raised eyebrow, Williams considers memory, hard-earned perspective, being enough, the lives we chased and the ones we're actually living.
Bodies change. Speed changes. Perspective changes. And somewhere along the way, we may discover that becoming older does not require becoming smaller.
It isn't about becoming older.
It's about becoming more.
OUTRAGEOUS
Outrageous is about what happens when you stop asking whether you are too old, too much, too late, or supposed to know better.
Pixel Williams picks up speed. She drives deliberately off the prescribed path, sheds rules that no longer matter, follows excitement, risks looking foolish, and distills life down to what is worth carrying forward.
There is less road ahead now, and suddenly that feels less like a warning than a reason to hit the gas. To take up space. To change your mind. To be everything and anything. To say yes to the ridiculous, the unexpected, and the sheer fun of still being here.
Growing older does not require growing quieter.
